Relative Positions Within Stream Transects

Abstract:

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor glacial meltwater stream attributes of the region. Optical topographic surveys were performed to produce a layout of the area studied. This file provides a list of distances and height differences for features along the transect line at each site ("T-points"). All heights are relative to the assumed zero value at the transect RM #1. Distances are horizontal.

Dataset ID:

5

Short name:

trnsrelp.dat

Data sources:

trnsrelp

Methods:

Transects were established on Taylor Valley streams during January, 1994. While performing an optical topographic survey, the relative distances and heights for features along each transect was determined and documented in this file.

Maintenance:

Data was collected and organized by Gordon Shupe. It was sent to Diane McKnight and Denise Steigerwald to include in the McMurdo Dry Valley stream database. The data was initially entered into the Microsoft Access relational database. Ascii, comma delimited and MS-DOS text files were exported from Access to generate the 'trnsrelp.dat' and 'trnsrelp.txt' data files used on the web page. In July 2000, dataset code and location code (strmtrnptid) fields were added. Strmtrnptid replaced the fields for transect# and point ID# within a transect. This would simplify generating links between different data and metadats fields and assist in making the data more relational / useful in Oracle and ArcInfo
