As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research program, continuous stage (lake level), ice surface ablation, surface PAR, and underwater PAR are collected at various lakes throughout the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. This package contains daily measurement summaries derived from high frequency data for Lake Fryxell, Lake Hoare, East Lake Bonney, and West Lake Bonney in Taylor Valley as well as Lake Miers in Miers Valley. MCM sometimes refers to these measurements as "blue box" data because the instrumentation used to be housed in a blue box.

in April 2016, after a revision of the Blue Box data, Peter Doran, John Priscu and Maciek Obryk concluded that West Lake Bonney Underwater PAR (Photosynthetic Active Radiation) data between 8-Jul-2008 and 12-Nov-2012 is questionable and likely inaccurate. Therefore, the UW_PAR data for West Lake Bonney and above date range has been replaced with blanks. Subsequent data derivatives and data snapshots have been updated accordingly

The Lake Fryxell basin is formed by a moraine depression in a wider portion of the Taylor Valley. It has a number of moraine islands and shallower areas, as well as several relatively well developed deltas. The lake is fed by at least 10 meltwater streams with a total drainage catchment of 230 km2. The lake is dammed to the southwest by the Canada Glacier and is topographically closed. It is perennially ice covered; during summer months, an ice-free moat generally forms around much of the lake margin. Lake levels have risen ~2 m between 1971 and 1996. There are no surface outflows; the only known water loss is through ice ablation (evaporation, sublimation and physical scouring). Lake Bonney is a saline lake with permanent ice cover at the western end of Taylor Valley in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Victoria Land, Antarctica. It is 7 kilometres or 4.3 mi long and up to 900 metres or 3,000 ft wide. A narrow channel only 50 metres or 160 ft wide. Lake Bonney at Narrows separates the lake into East Lake Bonney 3.32 square kilometres or 1.28 sq mi and West Lake Bonney, 0.99 square kilometres or 0.38 sq mi. The west lobe is flanked by Taylor glacier. Lake Hoare occupies a narrower portion of the Taylor Valley, dammed by the Canada Glacier. It would drain almost completely without this dam. There are a number of islands which may be related to an old terminal of Canada Glacier. The lake is fed primarily from direct runoff from the glacier, as well as meltwater streams. (Lake level rose ~1.5 m between 1972 and 1996). There are no surface outflows; the only known water loss is through ice ablation (evaporation, sublimation and physical scouring). Log files (changes made to the blue box dataset) and detailed diagrams of the blue box sensor, loggers and experiment deployment, plus sensor specifications and some operationational paramenters can be found in the Blue Box Bible. Data and metadata were moved into DEIMS on 2014. In 2016, Data package was readied for LTER NIS. San Gil

Details The details of all Blue Box methods can be found in the "Blue Box Bible". There is information about sensors, manuals of such sensors, field equipment diagram Field Setup changes (hardware changed at each lake), Software changes, and notes. The specific programs used are included for each lake. Sensors are attached to CR10X data logger. Sampling interval of measurements is 60 seconds. Every 20 minutes program calculates average and record it in the storage module. Data were downloaded every year by beginning of the season (October-November) and by the end of the season (January-February) and cleaned from error data. Please see in the general comments section for the details on sensors and field setup. Programs can be found in technical documentation aka Blue Box Bible this web site About the Log Files Log files (changes made to the blue box dataset) and detailed diagrams of the blue box sensor, loggers and experiment deployment, plus sensor specifications and some operational parameters can be found here. Notes on missing dataMissing data are mostly due to battery blackouts. Those points are represented as blanks in the database. if the blackout affects entire rows / dates, those may be missing.
