Lake Hoare

Lake Hoare view to the west

I visited Lake Hoare camp last week. The camp sits next to the Canada Glacier and Andersen Creek is a glacier meltwater stream that flows from Canada Glacier to Lake Hoare. The glacier is already starting to melt, but the streams have not started flowing yet. There is just a bit of water trickling off the face of the glacier when the sun hits the surface late in the evening. It sounds like rain drops, but it’s not. The low sun angles at night warm the west glacier face. The stream gauge on Andersen Creek is still frozen and there is a trace of ice in the stream channel that was left at the end of the melt cycle from last summer. The water sits frozen waiting for the right sun angle and warmer air temperatures. The stream water didn’t quite finish the trip to the lake before the air temperature dropped last February.
