Lake Bonney Snowfence Meteorological Station Monthly Averages

Abstract:

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, meteorological data was collected from various locations throughout Taylor, Wright and Victoria Valleys. These files contain data for the Lake Bonney Snowfence station (in Taylor Valley). Measurements at this temporary met station ceased on April 2006.

Here we offer the monthly averages based on the 15-min frequency data for the Lake Bonney Snowfence station.

Dataset ID:

7204

Associated Personnel:

Short name:

BOYS Monthlies

Methods:

During the 2000-2001 field season, the McMurdo LTER established a snowfence above (south) of the west lobe of Lake Bonney in western Taylor Valley. The station was set up to sample sensors every 30 seconds, except the sonic range which samples every 15 minutes, and send summary statistics (for example, averages and maximums) to solid-state storage modules every 15 minutes. This has resulted in approximately 20 values being recorded for final storage in every output interval.

bsn02035.dat notes:

1. Loaded new program, BS023v1.dld on January 24, 2003 @ 1415. Same name as old. Just changed on line of the program to use the multiplier to calculate the sonic depth.
2. Duplicate line at beginning of file with previous data file. Use line of data from previous file.
3. First value for depth sensor is bad, flag
4. Tired tighten down the middle vertical post, which contains all the sensors, but it is frozen in and cannot straighten completely. Did managed to get it close, so the depth will change. Old sonic depth is 110.4, new is 112.1.

1. Winter damage to snow fence. The fence was loose which caused the +1.8m soil PAR sensor, - 1m and -1m soil temperature probes to be pulled out. Data needs to be flagged. The fence also pulled out nails. Everything was placed back into original order and fence reconnected. Need to repair fence in later visit.

Additional information:

Meteorological data is collected year-round at each of the stations in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica.

After retrieving this data (usually every January), the parameters that are recorded are processed from level 0 (raw) to level 1 (processed, provided on the web). The  raw data file descriptions and task lists summarize what was done to get from  level 0 to level 1 for all station found at the following address:

The last usable data was recorded on January 4, 2006 @ 14:00. There was some intermittent data recorded during the 2006-2007 season, but not much. The station was modified in late January 2007 to support another experiment
