As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the abundance and species distribution of algal mats in glacial meltwater streams of the region. This data set includes results from light and dark incubations of algae to calculate net and gross primary productivity versus light curves of algal communities from Green Creek in Fryxell basin during January 1995. This data set constitutes the LTER algal primary productivity data for streams.

As a part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER program, isotope ratios have been determined for 166 samples of stream water in Taylor Valley, Antarctica. Hydrogen/deuterium isotope ratios are given for all samples, and for a subset, there are oxygen isotope ratios, and a deuterium-excess. Values are reported relative to VSMOW, +/- 1.0 per mil for hydrogen, and +/- 0.1 for oxygen.

As part of the new Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic aqueous geochemical sampling program has been undertaken. A series of terrestrial water samples have been collected and analyzed for major ion chemistry by ion chromatography. The concentrations of ions cover a wide range of total dissolved solids (TDS) from relatively pristine glacier ice to hypersaline lake waters.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, bathymetric data was collected for Lakes Hoare, Fryxell and Bonney. This table contains the values for depth, perimeter length, polygon area and total area per contour used for contour map digitizing.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, bathymetric data was collected for Lakes Hoare, Fryxell and Bonney. This table contains third order polynomial equations to fit the area vs. depth data of these lakes.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, bathymetric data was collected for Lakes Hoare, Fryxell and Bonney. This table contains areas, and volumes represented below a given depth for these lakes. Values were generated by Jeffrey Schmok based on field work he performed in November, 1995.

Concerns over environmental disturbance in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are increasing with increasing foot traffic from tourists and scientist. The effect of pedestrian disturbance was monitored by comparing the species composition, depth distribution and soil properties between adjacent high-, low- and no- traffic sites. This study began in the austral summer 1995/1996.

In the Antarctic Dry Valleys, soil polygons are prominent features of the landscape and may be key units for scaling local ecological information to the greater region. We examined polygon soils in each of the 3 basins of Taylor Valley, Antarctica. Our objectives were to characterize variability in soil biogeochemistry and biodiversity at local to regional scales, and to test the influence of soil properties upon invertebrate communities.
