In conjunction with the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, lakes were monitored for microzooplankton by a team based out of the University of Nottingham (led by Johanna Laybourn-Parry). This dataset shows the abundance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates, cryptophytes, and ciliates found at various depths in Lake Fryxell and Lake Hoare.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, the growth of benthic cyanobacteria-dominated mats in the lakes have been monitored. This dataset shows chlorophyll-a levels associated with the benthic mats. Values are provided for various depths of Lake Hoare during the 1996-97 field season, both with and without correction for phaeopigments.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, bathymetric data was collected for Lakes Hoare, Fryxell and Bonney. This table contains areas, and volumes represented below a given depth for these lakes. Values were generated by Jeffrey Schmok based on field work he performed in November, 1995.

As part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, hydrogen ion concentrations were monitored in various lakes of the region. An Orion portable pH meter was used to record hydrogen ion concentrations at depth specific intervals in perennial ice-covered lakes.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic aqueous geochemical sampling program has been undertaken. A series of water samples have been collected and analyzed for major ion chemistry by ion chromatography. The concentrations of ions cover a wide range of total dissolved solids from fresh to hypersaline lake waters. This dataset shows concentrations of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, chlorine, bromine, and SO4 found along the sediment/water interface of Taylor Valley lakes.

Using automated overwinter sampling devices, we collected preserved phytoplankton samples from multiple depths in Lake Fryxell, a permanently ice-covered lake in southern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Photosynthetic algae were maintained in a stable water column throughout winter darkness. The algal taxa overwintered in different ways in a species-specific manner. Typical vegetative cells were the most abundant form for all species found in the water column. Populations of one chlorophyte, Stichococcus sp., were observed in winter, but the species was absent in both summers.

During the 95/96 Austral summer, the depth of the Lake Hoare and Lake Fryxell was measured at several points and dates using a piezometer. Lake Joyce and the West Lake Bonney's depth were also measured using this instrument at one location.

Knowledge of the McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV) lakes is limited by winter access, a period which is most relevant in understanding the habitability of other icy worlds and critical to understanding the overall function of these lakes. Owing to the lack of winter access, data that normally require human presence are incomplete. Our goal was to conduct the first year-round investigation of the biogeophysics of these unique lakes. An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes.

The purpose of this experiment, performed as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) program, was to investigate the impact of lake level rise and moat expansion on microbial community diversity and function in the East Lobe of Lake Bonney, located in Taylor Valley, Antarctica. The “tLICE” experiment tested the following MCM5 Hypotheses: H3-Disturbance increases connectivity and accelerates shifts towards homogeneity, and H4-Decreased heterogeneity reduces community resistance and resilience.

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, we investigated relationships between wind conditions and barotropic seiches within Lake Hoare, located in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, during the 2012-2013 austral summer. Temporal changes in the water column were measured using a rugged, handheld, CastAway CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth probe, manufactured by SonTek), deployed through the Lake Hoare Limno Hole (note, this is a separate instrument from the SeaBird CTD used as part of the MCM LTER core limnological monitoring program).

This data package consists of microplankton counts from discrete water column samples collected at various depths in Lake Fryxell and Lake Hoare in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica. Samples were collected and preserved during the austral summer-autumn transition in 2007-2008 and in addition to routine McMurdo Dry Valley Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) core limnological sampling in November and December of 2008, 2010, and 2011. Data were imaged using flow cytometry (FlowCam VS-IV) and classified with statistical image-based software (Visual Spreadsheet, v4.17.14).
